Recently, due to the repeated decline in the popularity of consumers buying Japanese brand models, the sales growth rate of Japanese automakers in China has declined. However, Japanese brands have jointly invested with domestic auto groups to form joint ventures. In China, not only has it promoted economic development but also created more employment opportunities. Here is an overview of the joint ventures established by the six major Japanese brands in China.

As shown in the above figure, the domestic six major automobile groups and foreign-funded joint ventures have established 21 complete vehicle manufacturing enterprises, of which 47.6% of the total number of joint ventures with Japanese companies accounted for as many as 10. Among them, the number of vehicle manufacturing enterprises jointly invested by Guangzhou Automobile Group and Japanese brands is up to four, and the number of vehicle manufacturing enterprises jointly established by FAW Group, Dongfeng Group and Changan Group and Japanese brands is two.

There are 5 joint-venture vehicle manufacturing enterprises of Guangzhou Automobile Group, among which 4 are joint ventures with Japanese brands. As shown in the above figure, Guangzhou Automobile Group and Hino, Honda and Toyota each invested 50% to establish GAC Hino, Guangqi Honda and GAC Toyota. In addition, GAC Group and Mitsubishi Motors have established GAC Mitsubishi, in which GAC Group holds a 50% stake, Mitsubishi Auto Industries Co., Ltd. holds a 33% stake, and Mitsubishi Corporation holds a 17% stake.

FAW Group has three joint venture manufacturing companies, of which two are joint ventures with Japanese brands, namely FAW Toyota and FAW Mazda. The shares of FAW Toyota are held by Toyota Motor and FAW Group respectively. The shares of FAW Mazda are held by FAW Cars, 56%, FAW Group, 4% and Mazda Motors, 40%.

As one of the major automobile groups in China, Dongfeng Group has a total of five joint-venture vehicle manufacturing enterprises, among which the Japanese brand joint ventures are Dongfeng Honda and Dongfeng Nissan. In terms of equity, Dongfeng Honda’s shareholdings are held by Dongfeng Group and Honda Automobile respectively 50%; Dongfeng Nissan’s shares are held by Dongfeng Group and Nissan Motor respectively 50%.

The Changan Group has a total of four joint-venture vehicle manufacturing enterprises, of which half of the whole vehicle manufacturing companies formed by joint ventures with Japanese brands are Changan Mazda and Changan Suzuki. Changan Suzuki was jointly funded by Changan Group and Suzuki Motor. Changan Group holds a 51% stake in Suzuki Automobile, which holds a 49% stake. Changan Mazda's shares are held by Changan Group and Mazda Motors respectively.

Although some Japanese brands are still imported into domestic sales in purely imported form, most Japanese brands choose to form joint venture manufacturing enterprises in China, and the Chinese automobile group has become an important part of the joint venture.
