Prospect Heights Fire helps welcome wounded veteran – update
Lauren Claussen from the Prospect Heights Fire Department and Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images showcasing the heartfelt celebration for Army Sergeant Ben Stehman in Prospect Heights on Friday. The event was a touching tribute to his service and sacrifice, drawing attention from local residents, media, and community leaders.
The day began with fire department units lining the street before heading to the home of Sgt. Stehman’s parents. A quiet limousine arrived to transport the family, while members of the Warriors Watch Riders waited to escort him to a special luncheon in his honor. As the procession moved through town, local police closed roads to ensure a smooth route, passing by Sgt. Stehman’s former school where students had created handmade posters welcoming him back.
Inside the limo, Sgt. Stehman tried to stay composed as reporters and photographers surrounded him. At MacArthur Middle School, students displayed signs expressing their gratitude, calling him their hero. The ceremony continued at the Morava Center, where Prospect Heights personnel honored him with a special recognition, including the "Key to the City" presented by the mayor.
Sgt. Stehman took the opportunity to speak to those gathered, thanking them for their support and urging them not to forget the troops still serving overseas. He also posed for photos with the Warriors Watch Riders and a signed banner, marking a memorable day for the entire community.
