In January 2013, Michelin North America stated that it plans to invest 200 million U.S. dollars in its Starr plant in Anderson County, South Carolina, in the middle of 2014 to expand rubber compounds used in tire production.

Michelin said that the expansion project will employ 100 new employees in the Starr plant, but the company has not announced the scale of the capacity expansion and the expansion area of the plant. With this investment, Michelin’s total investment in South Carolina in the past 21 months has reached US$1.15 billion and created more than 870 production jobs.

Michel Kornacki, executive vice president and head of specialty products for Michelin North America, said: “(Starr) produces high-quality rubber compounds for Michelin tires. The ability of the plant to meet the strong demand for our tire products is very important. After the expansion of the factory, It will become Michelin's third largest global compound production plant."

South Carolina will provide Michelin with a $1.5 million incentive bonus. Michelin is the state's 9,000-employee company and one of the largest employers in local manufacturing.
