Toyota FT-1 Concept Debuts – What You Need to Know

Toyota introduced the FT-1, a retro-inspired racing concept that took center stage at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. This video game-style race car is sure to get your heart pounding.

Even sitting still, it looks ready to go fast.

The FT-1, which stands for "Future Toyota 1," isn’t just a design exercise—it’s a glimpse into Toyota’s future direction. Developed initially as a concept for the racing game *Gran Turismo 6*, the car was later brought to life as a real-world prototype. The Calty design team worked extensively on its appearance and performance before finalizing the project.

The new Toyota FT-1 looks fast, very fast.

Inspired by Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda’s vision to move away from the company’s more conservative design style, the FT-1 represents a bold step forward. According to Toyota, the project began nearly two years ago and was driven by a passionate and skilled team at Calty.

No racing car would be complete without a set of sweet wheels.

Alex Shen, Studio Chief Designer at Calty, described the FT-1 as a dream project. “We were inspired by Toyota’s sports car heritage, especially the Celica and Supra,” he said. “This is an aggressive, track-focused concept that aims to surprise and impress.” The design uses a philosophy called “Function-sculpting,” where the body appears to be shaped by the wind, creating dynamic, muscular lines. Air intakes, vents, and ducts are all designed to optimize airflow and enhance performance. A retractable rear wing also adds downforce at high speeds.

As part of the unveiling, Toyota had racing simulators set up to “drive” the car.

Designed as a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle, the FT-1 places the driver in the optimal position for balance and control. Its styling echoes the iconic Toyota 2000GT with a wraparound windshield and large side glass openings.

The aftermath of the unveiling of the FT-1 was full of cameras. This rear end has a retractable rear spoiler.

Inside, the cockpit is designed for performance, not daily commuting. It features an F1-style layout with a heads-up display and repositioned A-pillars for better visibility. Toyota describes a “delta-shaped display zone” meant to create a stronger connection between the driver and the car. Engine specifications remain undisclosed, but the car’s performance was tested in virtual racing simulations. During one test, Toyota President Akio Toyoda completed a lap around a computer-generated Fuji Speedway faster than his real-world record in the LFA. That moment sealed the car’s fate as a production-ready concept. “Sports cars represent the purest form of driving,” said Kevin Hunter, president of Calty Design Research. “FT-1 is more than just a visual statement—it's a symbol of Toyota's evolving design language and our commitment to passion, performance, and emotion.” What do you think? **Would you like to see the FT-1 in production?**
