If Only We Could Print Out Replacement Auto Parts…

Imagine if we could save a lot of money by making our own car parts and installing them ourselves. Like this paper version of a pickup truck—just print it, glue it together, and voilà! You’ve got yourself a brand new truck.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Every single part in a car is engineered to work perfectly with all the other components, ensuring durability, safety, and efficiency. Car manufacturers specify exact measurements and tolerances for OEM parts to guarantee they function seamlessly. So, when you replace a part, you’re not just swapping one piece—it’s about maintaining the integrity of the entire system.

OEM parts are designed specifically for your vehicle. They're built to match the original factory specifications, which means they fit, function, and last just like the ones that came with your car when it was new.

While OEM parts can be pricey, many people are tempted to go for cheaper aftermarket options. But there are two major issues with this approach:

  1. Many aftermarket parts aren’t tailored for your specific vehicle. Some are made for a range of models, using a “one size fits all” strategy. This might seem convenient, but it doesn’t account for the unique design and engineering of your car. The original manufacturer, which offers a full warranty, designed parts specifically for your model—so going with a generic replacement might not be the best idea.
  2. Aftermarket parts often come without a warranty. If you buy an OEM part, you usually get a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty against defects. That may not sound like much, but it shows the manufacturer has confidence in their product. Many aftermarket companies don’t offer the same level of assurance.

Of course, some aftermarket brands—like Raybestos, Delphi, and Brembo—are known for high-quality parts. However, these premium options often cost nearly as much as OEM parts. If you're paying almost the same price, why take the risk? It's hard to justify spending extra on something that might not hold up over time.

Gambling With Aftermarket Fit, Finish, And Quality

The saying "you get what you pay for" holds true here. Every time you install a cheap aftermarket part, you're essentially gambling that it will perform as expected, last long enough, and not cause damage to other components. There's always a risk involved.

OEM parts, on the other hand, are guaranteed to fit and function exactly as intended. Instead of worrying about whether a cheap wheel hub might fail on the highway, you can trust an OEM part to last just as long as the original.

To put it simply, OEM replacement parts come from the same assembly line and meet the same exact standards as the ones installed when your car was first built. That’s a big deal—especially when it comes to performance and reliability.

Are all aftermarket parts bad? Definitely not. But the high-quality ones often cost just as much as OEM parts. When the price is so close, choosing OEM makes more sense. After all, why take a chance when you can have peace of mind?

As for the really cheap aftermarket parts? Avoid them at all costs. There's always a trade-off in terms of quality, performance, or function. It’s not worth the risk.

What About 3D Printing Replacement Auto Parts?

3D printing is an exciting technology that could revolutionize how we replace car parts. Instead of buying OEM parts, you could download a 3D model and print it yourself. While no major companies currently offer this service, a new website is supposedly coming soon that will provide printable car part designs for DIY enthusiasts.
