Autodesk University 2020 was an incredible week filled with exciting updates, new tool releases, and meaningful interactions. Even though it was virtual, the experience felt more personal and engaging than ever before, with lots of opportunities to connect with fellow users and Autodesk team members. One of the most exciting moments for me this week was the announcement of our acquisition of Spacemaker. This is a major step forward for Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Design Solutions Group. Spacemaker brings powerful AI-driven automation that will enhance outcome-based design for architects and project owners. The legal team reminds us that the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be finalized during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends on January 31, 2021. Founded in 2016 in Oslo, Norway, Spacemaker has developed a cloud-based AI platform that helps architects, urban designers, and real estate developers optimize building sites from the very beginning of a project. Their technology enables faster decision-making, better collaboration across teams, and more sustainable design choices. This early-stage optimization not only speeds up the design process but also empowers teams to focus more on creativity and innovation. The Spacemaker team is a key strength of the company. With 110 employees, over 60% of whom are technical professionals—including data scientists, software engineers, and designers—Spacemaker is well-equipped to tackle some of the toughest challenges in the AEC industry. Their CEO, Havard Haukeland, is an architect turned entrepreneur, which speaks volumes about their deep understanding of the design process. By integrating Spacemaker into our portfolio, customers will gain access to advanced tools that allow them to explore multiple design variations and optimize solutions based on specific site requirements. This means more time for creative work and less time spent on repetitive tasks. In the coming months, we’ll collaborate closely with the Spacemaker team to expand their business and look for ways to integrate their technology into our existing products like FormIt and Revit. Additionally, Spacemaker complements our sustainability analysis tools, such as Insight, helping us deliver even more robust environmental insights to our users. This acquisition reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing more automation into our products and supporting the future of Building Information Modeling (BIM). It’s not just about improving tools—it’s about empowering the people who use them to design smarter, build better, and innovate faster. I’m excited to welcome the Spacemaker team to Autodesk. Their expertise and vision align perfectly with our mission to shape the future of design and construction. Thank you for being part of this journey.
