As with any car repair, preparation is crucial. Before diving into this project, ensure you have a well-lit workspace, all necessary tools, and a clear understanding of the steps involved. These preparations will save you time and frustration down the road.

To complete this task, gather the following tools:

  • Torque wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Impact wrench
  • Socket wrench set
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack
  • Metric wrench set

Steps to Replace Shocks and Springs

It's generally best to replace the front or rear shocks and springs together for consistency. Follow these steps:

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels and raise the car using a floor jack. Secure it with jack stands.
  2. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the tires.
  3. Locate and remove the front stabilizer link assembly bolt near the shock assembly.
  4. Remove the bolt on the other side, taking care to keep the speed sensor wires clear of the shock assembly.
  5. Open the hood or trunk and locate the shock tower bolts. They're usually found under the windshield wiper cowl in the front and above the tire in the rear.
  6. Loosen the bolts on top of the shock tower and then find the bolts securing the shock to the lower control arm. Loosen these as well.
  7. Once all bolts are loose, remove them entirely. Gently pull the shock assembly out of the wheel well.

At this stage, you have two options: purchase a pre-assembled shock kit for convenience or replace individual components, such as the spring, manually. While DIY assembly may save money, prefabricated kits are faster and often more reliable.

No matter which method you choose, reinstall the shock assembly into the wheel well and tighten all bolts securely. Torque specifications are as follows: top bolts to 38 ft-lbs, lower control arm bolts to 177 ft-lbs, center lock nut to 35 ft-lbs (if applicable), speed sensor bolt to 14 ft-lbs, and front stabilizer link assembly to 55 ft-lbs.
