Scion tC Maintenace – Shock and Spring Replacement
The comfort and handling of your Scion tC largely depend on its shocks and springs. If your vehicle feels unsteady or gives the impression of "floating," it's likely time to replace these components. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you through the process.

*Is your Scion tC due for a fresh set of shocks and struts? Here's how to install them.*
As with any automotive repair, preparation is crucial for success. While researching the replacement process, ensure you've considered the workspace—does it provide adequate lighting and cleanliness? Do you possess all necessary tools and understand how to use them? Addressing these concerns beforehand will save time and prevent potential mishaps.
For this project, you'll require the following tools:
- Torque wrench
- Breaker bar
- Impact wrench
- Drive socket wrench/set
- Jack stands
- Floor jack
- Metric wrench set
**Replacing the Shocks and Springs**
It's advisable to replace the front or rear shocks and springs together to maintain balance. Follow these steps:
1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels.
2. Lift the car using a floor jack and remove the lug nuts entirely along with the tires.
3. Secure the car with jack stands.
4. Place another jack stand under the lower suspension for additional stability.
5. Locate and remove the front stabilizer link assembly bolt near the shock assembly.
6. Remove the adjacent bolt, taking care to position the speed sensor wires and flex hose away from the shock assembly.
7. Open the hood or trunk depending on which set you're working on. Look for the shock assembly, which resembles a tower, held in place by bolts at the top. In the front, these are found beneath the windshield wiper cowl. Once removed, locate and loosen the bolts below. For the rear, search above the tire.
8. Loosen the top bolts of the shock tower.
9. Check the wheel well for bolts securing the shock assembly to the lower control arm. Loosen these bolts.
10. With all bolts loosened, remove those at the top of the tower.
11. From the lower control arm, remove the remaining bolts.
12. Gently pull the shock assembly out after all bolts are removed.
At this stage, you have options: purchase a pre-assembled shock or replace individual parts, compress the spring, and reinstall it. Pre-assembled kits are faster but may cost more than doing it manually.
Regardless of your choice, reinstall the shock assembly into the wheel well and tighten all bolts securely. Ensure the top bolts are tightened to 38 ft-lbs, the lower control arm bolts to 177 ft-lbs, the center lock nut to 35 ft-lbs (if applicable), the speed sensor bolt to 14 ft-lbs, and the front stabilizer link assembly to 55 ft-lbs.
