Open House for MABAS (update)
Last weekend, I had the chance to attend the MABAS Home Day Open House held at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. It was an incredible event filled with informative presentations and exciting displays. Here are some highlights from the day.
One of the most memorable parts of the open house was the gathering of many local fire chiefs and other officers. It was inspiring to see so many dedicated individuals come together to support the community. There were several presenters who shared valuable insights on various topics, making it a great learning experience for everyone in attendance.
Congressman Peter Roskam also made an appearance, addressing the fire service personnel. His speech was both engaging and motivating, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and preparedness within the emergency services sector. It was clear that his commitment to public safety aligns closely with the goals of the MABAS organization.
Another highlight was exploring the readiness center's impressive collection of specialized vehicles and equipment. One standout piece was the Mobile Field Office, which features sliding sides to expand its interior workspace. This unit, known as MSU-North or the Mission Support Unit for the northern region, is just one of three such units available. It’s designed to provide critical support during emergencies, showcasing the forward-thinking approach of MABAS.
The readiness center also houses Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) team. This elite group serves as the backbone of emergency response operations across Illinois. Adjacent to the task force’s resources, there was a display featuring the newest addition to their mobile equipment—a flatbed roll-off specifically for lumber. This addition will undoubtedly enhance their operational capabilities in future missions.
Also on display was the latest acquisition for MABAS specialized units: an 8×8 Oshkosh P-15 surplus from the Air Force. Known as one of the largest crash trucks ever built, it boasts an impressive capacity of 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF. Equipped with two 1,500-GPM pumps and two turrets rated at 1,250-GPM each, this vehicle represents cutting-edge firefighting technology. Although it’s currently not in active service, its potential applications remain a topic of much anticipation.
The open house was a testament to the dedication and innovation of the MABAS organization. It was heartening to see how these resources and partnerships can make a real difference in keeping communities safe. I left feeling grateful for the work being done by all those involved, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for MABAS and its mission.
