Open House for MABAS (update)
Last weekend, I had the chance to attend the MABAS Home Day Open House held at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. It was a great opportunity to see some of the impressive resources available to first responders in our area. Here are a few highlights from the event.
One of the most striking images from the day was the many area fire chiefs and other officers who gathered for the open house at the MABAS Readiness Center. Congressman Peter Roskam even took the time to address the fire service personnel, which was a real honor. His presence showed just how important these local services are to the community.
The readiness center itself is packed with all sorts of unique support units. One standout piece of equipment was the Mobile Field Office, a unit designed to provide extra workspace during emergencies. This particular unit, known as MSU-North or Mission Support Unit for the north region, is one of only three like it. It's a testament to the level of preparedness and planning that goes into these operations.
Another exciting addition to the readiness center is the 8×8 Oshkosh P-15 crash truck, recently acquired from the Air Force. This massive vehicle can carry up to 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF, making it one of the largest crash trucks ever built. It features two 1,500-GPM pumps and two turrets rated at 1,250-GPM each. Although it's not currently in service, its potential uses are sure to be impressive once it's fully integrated.
The warehouse also serves as the home base for Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state's Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) team. One side of the facility is dedicated to housing the resources needed for this critical task force. In fact, they've recently added a new flatbed roll-off for lumber, further enhancing their capabilities.
Overall, the open house provided a fascinating look into the world of emergency response and the dedication of those who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to celebrate and support these vital services.
