If Only We Could Print Out Replacement Auto Parts…

Imagine if we could save a lot of money by making our own car parts and installing them ourselves. Like this paper version of a pickup truck—just print it out, glue it together, and voilà! You’ve got yourself a brand new truck in no time.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Every part in a car is carefully designed to work with all the other components to ensure maximum durability, safety, and performance. Car manufacturers specify exact dimensions and tolerances for OEM parts to guarantee they function perfectly. So, when you replace a part, you want something that matches exactly what was originally installed.

OEM parts are specifically made for your vehicle, ensuring compatibility and reliability. While they can be more expensive, there's a reason for that. They’re built to the same standards as the original parts that came with your car when it was manufactured.

That’s why many people are tempted to go for cheaper aftermarket parts. But there are two major issues with that approach:

  1. Many aftermarket parts aren’t actually designed for your specific car. Some are made for multiple models, using a “one size fits all” strategy. The original manufacturer, on the other hand, designed their parts to fit your vehicle perfectly. Replacing an OEM part with a generic one might seem like a good idea, but it could lead to problems down the road.
  2. Aftermarket parts often come without a warranty. If you buy an OEM part, you usually get a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty against defects. That might not sound like much, but it shows the manufacturer stands behind their product. Many aftermarket companies don’t offer the same level of assurance.

Of course, some premium aftermarket brands like Raybestos, Delphi, and Brembo produce high-quality parts that can rival OEM components. However, these top-tier options often cost just as much as OEM parts. If you're paying the same price, why take the risk?

Gambling With Aftermarket Fit, Finish, And Quality

The old saying holds true: You get what you pay for. Every time you install a cheap aftermarket part, you’re essentially gambling on its performance, longevity, and compatibility. There’s always a risk involved. Would you rather trust a part that was made to the same exact specifications as the original, or take a chance on something that might not last?

OEM parts are guaranteed to fit and function as intended. Instead of worrying about whether an aftermarket wheel hub will fail on the highway, you can rest easy knowing that an OEM part will perform just as well as the one it replaced.

To be clear, not all aftermarket parts are bad. Some are reliable and high quality—but they often come at a similar price to OEM parts. When the cost is almost the same, going with OEM makes more sense.

So, if you’re looking at cheap aftermarket parts, think twice. There’s always a trade-off in terms of performance, reliability, and safety.

What About 3D Printing Replacement Auto Parts?

3D printing is an exciting development. It could one day allow you to print your own car parts instead of buying them from a dealer. Companies like Shapeways and Sculpteo already offer 3D printing services, but there aren’t many auto parts available yet. However, a new website is reportedly launching soon, offering downloadable 3D models of replacement car parts that you can print yourself.
