Fatal MVA involving school bus in Newport Township 4-5-13
This morning, a serious accident took place involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles at the intersection of Route 173 (Rosecrans Road and Kilbourn Road). Tragically, one person lost their life, and several others sustained injuries. Initial reports suggest that the school bus may have disregarded a red light, leading to a severe collision with an open-top Jeep Wrangler traveling southbound on Kilbourn Road. In the aftermath, the bus ended up on its side after hitting a Jeep Cherokee.
All the children aboard the bus had already been evacuated when emergency services arrived. A third alarm EMS response was activated, and multiple transports were carried out using ambulances. Many of the students were transported to the hospital aboard another school bus, accompanied by fire department personnel. Although Flight-For-Life was dispatched to the scene, no patients were airlifted as the driver of the Jeep Wrangler was declared deceased at the scene.

In further details provided by the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred around 8:05 a.m. as the school bus was transporting elementary students to Newport Elementary School. Witnesses report that the bus might have been late on the light when it collided with the Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Cherokee at the intersection also suffered significant damage.
The driver of the Jeep Wrangler succumbed to their injuries, while the children onboard the bus, though numerous, sustained only minor injuries. Of the 35 children involved, 23 were deemed stable enough to be transported by another school bus with paramedics on board, while 12 required immediate ambulance transport to nearby hospitals.
By midday, Dr. Charles Nozicka, medical director of the pediatric ER at Advocate Condell Medical Center, noted that all but one child had been discharged. The remaining child was still under observation, pending further assessment regarding overnight care.
