Experts gathered in Zhuozhou for advice and suggestions --- Zhejiang Fluorine Silicon Industry Base
Is Chuzhou capable of becoming a high-tech industrial base for fluorine and silicon chemicals in Zhejiang, and even across China? If the answer is yes, how can it be achieved? On December 3, a professional seminar jointly organized by the Zhejiang Provincial Economic and Trade Commission, the Quzhou City Government, and Juhua Group brought together dozens of chemical experts and industry officials from across the country to discuss strategies for building the Zhejiang Fluorosilicon Industry Base.
Academician Chen Qingyun from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that China's fluorosilicone chemical manufacturing industry is still in its early stages. Compared to international standards, there are significant gaps in product variety, quantity, and quality, and these gaps are widening over time. He pointed out that one major issue is the disconnect between research and market demand. While research institutions hold most of the scientific power, their focus is often on laboratory results rather than practical applications. This leads to a lack of motivation and innovation in developing products that meet real-world needs. For example, despite China being the world’s largest producer of basic fluorine chemicals like tetrafluoroethylene, only 3% of global sales come from Chinese fluorinated products. The majority of high-value products are still imported, highlighting the need to focus on downstream development.
Bai Yan, deputy dean of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute, noted that while Ganzhou has a unique advantage as the only base for both fluorine and silicon in China, the industry is highly competitive. Multinational corporations and private enterprises are increasingly entering the market, so it's crucial to closely monitor competitors and analyze external factors such as resource availability and environmental capacity. She stressed that a scientific development approach must include understanding the broader environment and ensuring sustainable growth.
Professor Zhou Kejing from the China Fluorosilicone Organic Materials Industry Association highlighted the importance of improving the foundational aspects of the industry before focusing on downstream development. Although China produces a large amount of PTFE, it still imports high-quality versions due to technical limitations. He suggested that Chuzhou should enhance product quality, production technology, and standardization to align with global levels. Additionally, he recommended paying more attention to the circulation and service sectors, which play a key role in supporting the development of an industrial base.
Bo Lafa, a senior engineer from the Zhejiang Environmental Institute, emphasized that environmental protection is critical for the long-term success of the fluorosilicon industry in Chuzhou. Given the city's location in the upper reaches of the Qiantang River, where water pollution is already severe, strict environmental controls must be implemented. Projects must be carefully selected, and sufficient investment must be made in waste treatment facilities to ensure sustainable development. Only through responsible environmental management can the industry thrive and remain viable for future generations.
