CFD – new station construction update
Construction has officially begun on the new firehouse at 53 E. Pershing Road, which will serve Engine 16, Ambulance 35, EMS Field Division South, and 5-1-1. The old warehouse and basement on the site have been removed, and the foundation is now being prepared with work starting on the footings.
This new structure stands out from many of the recent firehouse designs, though it bears a strong resemblance to the one currently under construction for Engine 109 at 2343 S. Kedzie Avenue.
Both Engine 16 and Engine 109 feature a modern, squared design with extensive use of glass. Their apparatus bays have flat roofs, unlike the sloped awnings seen on other stations. The buildings also incorporate different brick trim and more interior glass rather than solid brick walls. A notable feature is the square hose tower, which contrasts with the rounded ones found in some other stations. Additionally, these new stations include both horizontal and vertical windows, a departure from the previous all-horizontal window design.
Stations with hose towers also feature a conventional door integrated into the overhead door near the street, making access more efficient.
