Construction has officially begun on the new firehouse at 53 E. Pershing Road, which will serve Engine 16, Ambulance 35, the EMS Field Division South, and 5-1-1. The site has been cleared of the old warehouse and basement, and foundation work is now underway with preparations for the footings.

The design features a more modern, squared-off look with extensive use of glass. Unlike other stations that have an angled awning roof over the apparatus bays, this one has a flat roof. The brick trim along the top of the walls is different, and there’s more glass inside rather than all-brick walls. It also includes a square hose tower, whereas most other stations feature a rounded one. Additionally, these new stations incorporate both horizontal and vertical windows, unlike previous designs that only had one type.

This house in the 9th Battalion is known as the 'Full House' since it is home to Engine 59, Engine 70, Truck 47, Ambulance 13 and Battalion 9. Located at 6030 N. Clark Street, it has no hose tower and a much smaller footprint on the 'front' end when compared to Engine 18's house. Hank Sajovic photo

Stations with a hose tower also include a conventional door within the overhead door of the apparatus bay closest to the street.
