Brush fire in Palatine 3-10-12

Saturday, the Palatine Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire in the Cook County Forest Preserve area, located roughly between Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. The incident took place along Dee Road, west of Rand Road off Lake-Cook. Upon arrival, Palatine’s Battalion 8 sent Engine 82 and Lake Zurich Engine 4 to the scene. They found flames burning through tall grass in an area that is mostly marshland, with several feet of wet ground making it difficult to navigate. Due to the challenging terrain, brush rigs could not be used, so crews had to approach on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team arrived. Several pickups equipped with skid-mounted units and an ATV with a small tank and booster line joined the effort. The fire occurred in a large field that was largely composed of muddy marshland, making suppression efforts particularly difficult. Firefighters stretched hundreds of feet of attack lines to tackle the flames and protect nearby residential and commercial areas. Larry Shapiro spent several hours at the scene, capturing multiple images that highlight the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding crews. His photos show firefighters using an ATV-mounted unit to wet down unburned grass, as well as teams moving into the brush to contain the spread. High winds were a major challenge, pushing the fire toward new fuel sources and increasing its intensity throughout the day. After over three hours of work, Palatine’s crews initiated a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm to bring in additional personnel and ensure their town remained protected. Conditions were ideal for wildland fires—low humidity, extreme dryness, and strong winds all contributed to the rapid spread. As the fire grew, more units were called in to prevent it from reaching nearby structures. At one point, the flames threatened businesses along Rand Road, prompting increased efforts to control the situation. Palatine Engine 82 was stationed at a car dealership near Rand Road and Lake-Cook Road, supplying a quint with 800 feet of attack line to reach the fire. Despite the tough conditions, firefighters managed to keep the fire from spreading to any buildings. By around 10 PM, the fire was under control, and the box alarm was lifted. More photos will be available in a gallery on Sunday, along with a video from the scene.
