Brush fire in Palatine 3-10-12
On Saturday, the Palatine Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire in the Cook County Forest Preserve area, located roughly between Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. The incident took place along Dee Road, west of Rand Road and near Lake-Cook. Palatine’s Battalion 8 arrived on scene with Engine 82 and Lake Zurich Engine 4. Upon arrival, they found flames burning through tall grass in an area that is mostly marshland, with several feet of soft, wet ground making it difficult to navigate.
Due to the challenging terrain, brush rigs could not be used, so firefighters had to approach the fire on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team arrived. Several pickup trucks equipped with skid-mounted units and an ATV with a small water tank and booster line joined the effort, helping to manage the spread of the fire.
The conditions were tough, but crews worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. They stretched hundreds of feet of attack lines to reach the fire and protect nearby residential and commercial areas. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, spent several hours at the scene capturing the intensity of the situation, sharing multiple images that highlighted the challenges faced by the firefighters.
As the fire raged, strong winds pushed the flames further, creating dangerous conditions. After working for over three hours, Palatine Fire Department initiated a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm to bring in additional resources and ensure their town remained protected. More units arrived to help control the fire, which threatened businesses along Rand Road.
The fire eventually died down, and crews managed to prevent any structure from being impacted. By 10 PM, the box alarm was lifted, and the area was secured. More photos will be available in a gallery on Sunday, along with a video from the scene, giving a more complete view of the event.
