Strong convective weather recognition technology development project based on comprehensive observation

On March 22, the national key research and development plan titled “Significant Natural Disaster Monitoring, Early Warning and Prevention” officially launched its 2018 project: “Development of Strong Convective Weather Identification Technology and Demonstration System Based on Integrated Observation.” The event took place in Beijing, marking a significant step forward in China’s efforts to improve early warning systems for severe weather events. Strong convective weather, which includes thunderstorms, hail, heavy rainfall, and winds exceeding 17.2 m/s, is known for its sudden onset and high destructive power. These weather phenomena can pose serious threats to life and property, making accurate monitoring and timely warnings essential. However, due to their short lifespan and small spatial scale, detecting and predicting such weather remains a major challenge in meteorology. To address this issue, the National Meteorological Center (CMA) led a collaboration involving multiple institutions, including Nanjing University, the China Meteorological Administration Meteorological Exploration Center, the Jiangsu Institute of Meteorological Sciences, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Beijing Institute of Urban Meteorology, China Ocean University, the Wuhan Heavy Rain Research Institute, the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, and Beijing Minstar Radar Co., Ltd. Together, they are working on developing advanced technologies for identifying and monitoring strong convective weather. The project was officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2018, with a total budget of 21.33 million yuan from the central government. The project duration is set at 37 months, and it officially commenced on March 22 in Beijing. During the launch meeting, the project leader, Zheng Yongguang, presented the overall implementation plan and announced the formation of an expert advisory group. Representatives from each sub-project also shared their individual strategies. The expert panel reviewed the plans and provided valuable insights into potential challenges and technical issues. Participants engaged in detailed discussions about related technologies and internal management processes. Looking ahead, the National Meteorological Center will continue to support the project, strengthen partnerships with research institutes, universities, and enterprises, and incorporate feedback from consultants and experts. The goal is to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of monitoring and early warning systems for strong convective weather, ultimately improving China's ability to respond to these hazardous weather events.
