Selective leaching of cadmium from the filter cake of the wet zinc smelting plant

Aparajith.B et al. studied a simple wet process for the selective recovery of cadmium from Cd-Cu-Zn filter cakes produced in the electro- zinc process. The conventional process of leaching, filtering and re-leaching of cadmium requires multiple stages and is costly. The purpose of this study was to find a simpler way to recover cadmium from the copper -cadmium filter cake in the zinc purification stage of the electrolytic zinc process. The procedure investigated included removal of zinc from the Cu-Cd filter cake, selective leaching of cadmium and purification of cadmium by removal of Fe, Tl and Co followed by electrolysis and melting.

The zinc in the Cu-Cd filter cake is transferred to the liquid phase in two stages, and copper and cadmium are enriched in the filter cake. The leaching of cadmium from the filter cake is carried out at a higher solid-liquid mass-volume ratio, and the concentration of cadmium in the solution is higher. Selective leaching of cadmium under special conditions minimizes the co-precipitation of impurities in the cadmium-rich solution.

The leaching reaction stops at the beginning of the dissolution of copper. Impurities and precipitates such as T1, Fe and Co are oxidized and precipitated with KmnO4 and NaOH. Cadmium sulfate solution was purified by cathodic electrolysis Cd, and 99.95% of the resulting molten metal cadmium. The total recovery of cadmium in the entire process is 70% to 72%. Based on the results of this study, a conceptual process was developed.
