Scientists develop the first all-solid-state mid-infrared laser beam steering control device

There is no doubt that mechanical equipment is always more susceptible to damage over time, as are mechanical laser beam steering systems and home vehicles. Especially for chemical sensing and lidar (LiDAR) applications, mid-infrared beam scanning requires speed and reliability, while beam-control mechanisms such as mechanical motion mirrors and rotating prisms tend to be slower and consume more energy.

American scientists have designed a non-mechanical chip steering device for a mid-infrared laser beam. Compared with a gimbal-driven mirror and the like, the chip can realize two-dimensional continuous scanning of a 3-5um wavelength beam, and the scanning speed is faster.

Developed and manufactured by the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the chip is a solid-state device called the Steerable electro-evanescent optical refractor (SEEOR). These chips have already shown application prospects in beam steering at telecom wavelengths, and it is possible to enter the field of autonomous vehicles in the future. NRL scientists believe their SEEOR is the first device to operate in the mid-infrared band.

The SEEOR chip can input medium-wave infrared laser light to control beam steering at the output in two dimensions without mechanical means.

SEEOR looks like a small sandwich with a multi-layer film on the substrate, and the side looks like a trapezoidal silicon wafer. The sandwich structure comprises a 1.2 um chalcogenide glass passive waveguide core, a liquid crystal layer and a cover slip with patterned electrodes. The whole chip is 48.5mm long, 14.5mm wide and 2.75mm deep.

The collimated light from the 4.6 um wavelength quantum cascade laser enters the SEEOR at one end, and the voltage applied to the electrodes redirects the liquid crystal molecules to change their refractive index in a controlled mode.

This proof-of-concept device can steer the mid-infrared beam in a two-dimensional range of 14° x 0.6°. However, only about 3% of incident light can be emitted from the other end of the SEEOR, but NRL scientists say that by adding anti-reflective coatings and other optimizations to reduce internal scattering, the light throughput can be greatly improved.
