North Chicago is on the site

In northern Lake County, the **North Chicago Fire Department** operates a fleet of **Pierce** and **Medtec** units from two fire stations. Their 8-square-mile jurisdiction borders the Great Lakes Naval Training Center on both sides. Recently, they introduced a brand-new **85-foot tower ladder** from **Pierce**, which replaced an older **1977 Hendrickson 1871-S/Pierce/LTI 85-foot tower ladder**. The department is also set to receive another new **Pierce custom Contender engine** in January, replacing their **1986 Pierce Dash engine** with open jump seats. The old tower ladder, a classic piece of equipment that served the department for decades, was recently retired and is now part of the **Larry Shapiro collection**. This historic unit was once a staple of North Chicago’s firefighting efforts and symbolized the city's commitment to safety and service. ![North Chicago's 1977 Hendrickson 1871-S/Pierce/LTI 85' tower ladder](image) *North Chicago's 1977 Hendrickson 1871-S/Pierce/LTI 85' tower ladder which was disposed of recently with the arrival of the new tower ladder. It represents a modern upgrade that enhances response capabilities and ensures the department remains equipped for the challenges ahead. ![North Chicago Fire Department Pierce Arrow XT 85' tower ladder](image) *North Chicago's new Pierce Arrow XT 85' tower ladder.* At **Station 2 on Buckley Road**, the department has a notable ambulance that stands out from the rest. Purchased in 2009, this **Ford Medtec Type III ambulance** was originally a **demonstrator model** built in 2002. It arrived with **blue decals**, designed by Medtec to appeal to traditional rescue squads. However, the blue graphics were soon removed and replaced with **red markings**, giving it a more distinct look compared to other ambulances in the fleet. ![Prior to changing the graphics on this 2002 Medtec demonstrator...](image) *Prior to changing the graphics on this 2002 Medtec demonstrator that North Chicago purchased in 2009, it was in service for a short time with the blue graphics seen here. This photo was taken on-scene at a 2nd alarm fire response in Libertyville in July of 2009 shortly after the new ambulance was delivered.
