Fatal MVA involving school bus in Newport Township 4-5-13

This morning, a serious accident involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles left one person dead and several others injured. The collision took place at the intersection of Route 173 (Rosecrans Road and Kilbourn Road). Witnesses reported that the school bus failed to stop at a red light and was hit broadside by an open-top Jeep Wrangler. The impact caused the bus to roll onto its side and collide with a Jeep Cherokee parked nearby. Thankfully, all the schoolchildren had already exited the bus before the first emergency responders arrived. A third alarm EMS (Life-Safety) call was placed, and multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Many of the children were transported to the hospital on another school bus, accompanied by fire department personnel. Although Flight-For-Life was summoned to the site, no patients were airlifted, as the driver of the Jeep Wrangler was pronounced dead at the scene. I spoke briefly with Tim Olk, who was present at the scene and managed to capture a couple of quick photos. One shows the vehicle involved in the fatal crash, while the other captures the Flight-For-Life helicopter that was on standby but didn’t end up transporting anyone. In further developments, the Chicago Tribune published an article detailing the incident. According to reports, the school bus driver reportedly ran a red light, leading to a severe collision with two SUVs near Wadsworth. Fortunately, despite the severity of the crash, officials stated that the injuries sustained by the numerous elementary students aboard the bus were relatively minor. The accident occurred around 8:05 a.m., just as the bus was en route to Newport Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran mentioned that initial witness accounts suggest the bus may have been late on the light as it traveled westbound on Route 173, striking a Jeep Wrangler traveling south on Kilbourne Road. Sheriff Curran described the collision as a "T-bone" impact, emphasizing its forcefulness. Additionally, a Jeep Cherokee positioned at the intersection sustained significant damage as well. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler tragically lost their life in the crash, while the children involved were categorized as having "walking wounded" injuries. By the time paramedics arrived, all the children had been evacuated from the bus. Out of the dozens of kids on board, twenty-three were assessed as having a code green status, meaning they were in good to fair condition. These children were transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville via another school bus, accompanied by two paramedics onboard and two ambulances acting as escorts. Another twelve students required more immediate care and were sent to hospitals by ambulance. Additionally, two individuals from the Jeep Cherokee were also transported to medical facilities. Dr. Charles Nozicka, the medical director for the pediatric ER at Advocate Condell, provided updates later in the day. He mentioned that all but one child had been discharged by noon. The remaining child was still under observation, though it remained unclear whether they would need to stay overnight. The Tribune article, complete with a video segment featuring aerial footage of the crash site, can be found here. Furthermore, a comprehensive gallery of images captured by Chris Walker is available here. Overall, while the situation could have been far worse, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly when it involves vulnerable populations such as schoolchildren.
