CFD firefighter shot by CPD (updated and corrected)

Initial reports can be misleading:

At 4:06 PM, the Chicago Tribune released an updated report that shed new light on the incident involving a Chicago firefighter who was shot by police. According to authorities, the off-duty firefighter was involved in a tense encounter at a CVS pharmacy in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

The man was seen standing in a shooting stance, holding what appeared to be a weapon, when he was shot around 12:45 PM. However, it was later revealed that the object in his hand was actually his wallet. Patrick Camden, a spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police, confirmed this detail.

The firefighter was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery. Initially, officials reported that he had died, but later updates indicated his condition was stable. This back-and-forth in the official statements highlights the confusion surrounding the event.

Earlier reports suggested that the firefighter had opened fire on officers responding to a call about a man threatening suicide. But as more details emerged, the narrative changed. According to Camden, the firefighter’s wife had contacted police, expressing concern about his mental state and the fact that he had access to a gun. He had been on medical leave and had a history of depression.

Police were initially directed to a pharmacy on 111th Street, but after not finding anyone matching the description, they went to the CVS on 103rd Street. There, they found the firefighter sitting in his car, talking on the phone. When asked to show his hands and exit the vehicle, he made the sign of the cross, opened the door, and jumped out with his hands in a "combat position," holding a dark object that looked like a gun.

No weapon was found at the scene, though one was later recovered from his home. The man was also identified as a paramedic who lived just two miles away from the location of the incident.

Earlier that day, at 2:27 PM, the Chicago Tribune had published a different version of the story, stating that a Chicago Fire Department employee had been shot and killed by police after opening fire on responding officers. The report described the incident as occurring at a CVS Pharmacy on 103rd Street, where the man was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

This evolving story underscores the importance of waiting for full information before drawing conclusions. As more facts come to light, the initial reports may change, revealing a more complex and nuanced situation.

Thanks, Dennis.
