5th Alarm fire in Woodstock, 11-26-13
On the night of November 26th, 2013, the Woodstock Fire Department was called to a possible barn fire at 16812 Kunde Road in Union. When units arrived, they found a fully involved hay barn. Command requested MABAS Box #5-73 to the second level at 6:40 pm. The responding units included a Crystal Lake engine, a Marengo engine, a Union tanker, a McHenry tanker, a Cary tanker, a Harvard squad, a Wonder Lake squad, a Huntley RIT chief and engine, EMA, and the Salvation Army. On the command side, there were a Fox Lake engine, Marengo EMS, the Woodstock chief, and a Nunda Rural tanker.
Shortly after, command upgraded to the third alarm at 6:48 pm. This call brought a Wauconda engine, the Nunda Rural tanker, a Hebron tanker, an Algonquin truck, a McHenry squad with a cascade, and a Harvard chief.
Around 7:00 pm, command escalated to the fourth alarm, specifically for tankers only. This brought in a Hampshire tanker, a Spring Grove tanker, a Fox River Grove tanker, and a Richmond tanker. Firefighters were battling a large, fully engulfed hay barn with some exposure to nearby structures. All the tankers were working together, supplying multiple lines. About an hour and a half into the incident, command asked for the fifth alarm, this time for engines only. That brought a Rutland-Dundee engine and an engine from Walworth, Wisconsin. The MABAS Box was eventually pulled out around 9:00 pm, but crews were still on scene working late into the night.
Thanks, Tyler.
