4-Alarm house fire in Wadsworth, 1-23-14 (pt 1)
At 3:30 PM on Thursday, the Newport Township Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 38591 Arbor Court in Wadsworth. Upon arrival, the first responding units found a large two- and three-story home engulfed in flames at the end of a dead-end street within a subdivision that lacked hydrants. The initial alarm was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm as crews began an interior attack, supported by one of Newport’s pumper/tankers.
However, the fire spread rapidly, forcing crews to abandon the interior operation. Within minutes, the alarm was upgraded to a second, then a third, and finally a fourth alarm, bringing in additional resources from across Lake County and neighboring Kenosha County in Wisconsin. A significant tanker shuttle was established, with three portable tanks placed approximately 2,000 feet away from the structure at the intersection of Cashmere Road and Crabapple Drive. At least 10 tankers were deployed, each traveling over three miles to fill up and return to the scene.
The fourth alarm was called off just after 7 PM. Jeff Rudolph arrived with the box alarm companies and captured images of the home fully involved in flames. Later, Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro also reached the scene and plan to share more photos and a video soon.
