4-Alarm house fire in Wadsworth, 1-23-14 (pt 1)

On Thursday at 3:30 PM, the Newport Township Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 38591 Arbor Court in Wadsworth. Upon arrival, first responders found a large two- and three-story home engulfed in flames at the end of a dead-end street within a subdivision that lacked fire hydrants. The initial alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm as crews initiated an interior attack, supported by one of Newport’s pumper/tankers. However, the fire spread rapidly, forcing crews to abandon the interior approach. Within minutes, the alarm was escalated to a second, then third, and finally a fourth alarm, bringing additional units from across Lake County and neighboring Kenosha County, Wisconsin. A significant tanker shuttle operation was launched, with three portable tanks positioned approximately 2,000 feet away at Cashmere Road and Crabapple Drive. At least 10 tankers were deployed, traveling over three miles to refill and return, adding to the complexity of the response. The fourth alarm was called off just after 7 PM. Jeff Rudolph arrived on scene with the box alarm companies and captured images of the house fully involved in flames. Later, Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro also arrived, and they plan to share more photos and a video soon. Several images have been uploaded, showing the devastation. These include multiple shots of the fully burned-out structure, as well as a unique moment where firefighters rescued chickens from the burning home. One photo even captures a firefighter with an ice-covered helmet, highlighting the challenging conditions faced during the operation. The community is now left to deal with the aftermath of this devastating fire.
