U.S. Uses "False" Virus to Make Real Vaccine
Scientists in the United States created a "fake" virus that was not found in nature by rearranging the genetic code of poliovirus and injecting it into experimental mice. The results showed that the mice raised the immunity to the true virus, and the "pseudo" virus played the role of an inactivated vaccine.
Researchers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook reported in the latest issue of the American Journal of Science that in 2002 they rearranged the four bases of DNA of poliovirus, adenine, Guanine, cytosine and thymidine, the order of these bases combined and arranged determines the genetic traits of the organism. In the end, the researchers created a "fake" polio virus that does not exist in nature.
Bases are assembled into amino acids through different arrangements, which in turn constitute proteins. The same amino acid can be formed by combining more than one base, but for some reason, organisms always prefer a particular combination of bases.
Researchers based on this characteristic, chose a relatively "microbe-free" base combination, using a unique method to create a "soft" new type of poliovirus. The toxicity of this virus is relatively weak, only a large dose will cause the disease.
The researchers vaccinated the mice with the new poliovirus, and then infected the mice with deadly "original" poliovirus. The mice survived.
The researchers pointed out in the report that they hope to use this method to use artificial viruses to stimulate the biological immune system to achieve preventive effects. This research result is expected to be used to develop new vaccines.
