Sany Heavy Industry’s North Plant No. 2 was full of excitement recently. On March 31, a new addition to the family, the SE408 excavator, was officially launched. This 42-ton hydraulic excavator marks a major milestone for Sany, as it now has the capability to develop and manufacture large-tonnage crawler-type excavators independently.
Since January this year, Sany Heavy Industries has been working on the SEC408 tracked hydraulic excavator, adjusting its development strategy to meet evolving market demands. Despite tight deadlines, high expectations, and complex challenges, the project team managed to complete all stages—from initial research to design review—in just five months. The unit was successfully put into trial production in June as planned.
During the prototype phase, the team faced several obstacles, including self-made no-load fixtures, shortages of materials for large structural components like the rotary platform and working device, site production difficulties, and delays in component deliveries. Rather than waiting for solutions, the team took initiative, developed countermeasures, and worked closely with internal departments. Even under the sweltering July heat, they worked overtime to overcome these challenges and ensure the prototypes were completed on schedule.
One of the key features of the SEC408 is that major structural parts such as the slewing platform and working device are produced in-house. This not only significantly reduces manufacturing costs but also provides valuable technical experience for future large-scale excavator components. Currently, the SEC408 is in high demand, with a price tag of 1.8 million yuan. Its successful trial production has become another significant contributor to Sany's profit growth.
To better meet market needs, Sany Heavy Industry has expanded its excavator lineup since the end of last year. It has introduced models ranging from 6 tons to 31 tons, and even offers different configurations for 20, 21, and 22-ton excavators. Additionally, tire-mounted excavators will soon enter mass production.
Internationally, Sany's excavator sales have seen strong growth. Export orders are currently in short supply. Recently, four SY220C1 units were sent to Morocco, and it is expected that more than 10 excavators will be exported in August. With continuous innovation and expansion, Sany continues to strengthen its position in the global construction equipment market.
