Northfield house fire 8-28-11

Late Sunday night, residents in Northfield reported smoke in the 300 block of Eaton Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from an unknown source throughout the block. As they walked the area, the fire engine moved to the next block and discovered thick smoke pouring from a one-story brick ranch house at 344 Wagner Road.

The incident was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, and Northfield crews quickly got to work. Mutual aid from Winnetka, Northbrook, Glenview, Glencoe, and Wilmette responded. The fire was brought under control rapidly. Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time, though the family dog did not survive the blaze.

Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were on-site capturing the event. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Local officials are reminding residents to ensure their smoke detectors are working and to have an emergency plan in place.
