While hydrogen combustion differs significantly from natural gas, Nationwide Boiler's engineering team has extensive data and experience supporting the use of hydrogen-blend fuels in package boiler applications. Thanks to the company's rigorous standards for rental boiler construction—incorporating high-grade valves, robust fuel trains, advanced burners, and other critical components—the modifications needed for hydrogen firing are minimal. The company has verified that its current fleet of watertube rental boilers, ranging from 30,000 to 125,000 pounds per hour (pph), can safely fire blends of up to 20% hydrogen mixed with natural gas without requiring any system adjustments. For higher hydrogen concentrations, further evaluation of specific components will be necessary, along with potential burner modifications.
David Spain, Nationwide Boiler's Technical Manager, emphasized the environmental benefits of hydrogen. "Hydrogen combustion produces no CO2 emissions and is cleaner than petroleum-based fuels. However, it does lead to higher flame temperatures, which can increase NOx output.
