Nationwide Boiler Announces Hydrogen Firing Capabilities for Existing Fleet of Rental Boilers

Nationwide Boiler Inc., a pioneer in the boiler rental industry with over a hundred units in its fleet, has made a significant announcement regarding the utilization of hydrogen as a fuel source for its existing package watertube rental boilers. As global concerns about climate change and decarbonization continue to grow, this development aligns perfectly with Nationwide Boiler's commitment to a sustainable future.

Hydrogen, while producing no CO2 emissions, presents unique challenges in terms of combustion compared to natural gas. However, Nationwide Boiler's engineering team has extensive experience and data supporting the safe operation of hydrogen-blend fuels in package boiler applications. Thanks to Nationwide Boiler’s rigorous construction standards—employing high-grade valves, robust fuel trains, burners, and other critical components—the requirements for burner upgrades to accommodate hydrogen are minimal. Currently, the company has verified that its entire fleet of watertube rental boilers, ranging from 30,000 to 125,000 pounds per hour (pph), can safely handle up to 20% hydrogen blended with natural gas without any system modifications. For blends containing a higher percentage of hydrogen, further evaluations will be conducted, and burner adjustments may be necessary.
David Spain, Nationwide Boiler’s Technical Manager, emphasized the importance of their existing emission control technology: “While hydrogen combustion does lead to higher flame temperatures, resulting in increased NOx output, our CataStak™ SCR system is a proven solution. It reduces NOx emissions down to as low as 2½ ppm, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations."
