National Volunteer Week: Rümineers put the “U” in Community

In our community, we believe that caring, collaboration, agility, integrity, and safety are the values that define who we are at Rümi. As a company dedicated to bringing joy into the places people live and work, we’re passionate about making a positive impact in the communities we serve. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, we wanted to shine a light on some of our amazing Rümineers—team members who embody our values and give back to their communities. One such pair is Thomas and Garrett from our Customer Care Happiness Centre. Together, they’ve contributed over 40 hours of volunteer time, and collectively, Rümi employees gave more than 400 hours in 2022 alone! We sat down with them to learn more about their experiences and what drives them to volunteer. **What do you enjoy most about volunteering?** Garrett: “It’s all about connecting with people. I love being able to meet customers face-to-face and show them the real people behind the phone calls.” Thomas: “I really enjoy meeting people in person and hearing directly from them about what they want. It’s one thing to guess, but hearing it from them makes a big difference.” **Why do you think volunteerism and connection go hand in hand?** Garrett: “I grew up in Alberta, and I love hearing stories from event attendees about how they’ve interacted with ATCO or enjoyed Blue Flame Kitchen cookbooks. Everyone has a story about us!” Thomas: “Since I’m not originally from Alberta, I see how deeply connected people are here. Rümi being part of the ATCO family helps us build those relationships and make an impact.” **What’s your favorite part of volunteering?** Thomas: “It’s just fun! Talking to people and being out there in the middle of everything. We’re always busy, but it never feels like we’re stuck in a booth.” Garrett: “It’s not just about the events and prizes—it’s also about volunteering with groups like WINS. It’s a great way to connect with coworkers while giving back.” **What’s your most memorable moment as a volunteer?** Thomas: “I remember when we were at a soccer event, and two people swapped sunglasses right in front of us!” Garrett: “One guy was really excited for his birthday and wanted a pair of our green Rümi sunglasses. The last pair was given to someone else, and he ended up trading his brand-name sunglasses for ours. That was pretty funny!” **What’s next for Rümi in the community?** Since launching ügive, our community initiative, we’ve focused on supporting local charities that align with our mission. From home builds with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta to clean-up projects with HomeSpace, and donation drives like Handbags with Heart with WINS, our team continues to step up and give back. **2022 Community Investment Achievements:** - Exclusive sponsorship of the Home Refurbishment Program with Habitat for Humanity, including $20,000 and six months of free energy from ATCOenergy. - Donated over 400 hours of community service. - Built homes with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. - Sorted donations with WINS (Women in Need Society). - Revitalized spaces with HomeSpace Society. - Launched a matching program where Rümi donates to charities on behalf of employees who volunteer outside of ügive initiatives.
