National Volunteer Week: Rümineers put the “U” in Community

As a company dedicated to bringing happiness to the places people live and work, we believe in spreading joy throughout our communities. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, we’re excited to share some inspiring stories from our Rümineers, who embody our values and make a real difference. **Making the Connection** If you’ve ever attended one of our events, you might have met Thomas and Garrett, two passionate members of our Customer Care Happiness Centre. Together, they’ve contributed over 40 volunteer hours, adding to the more than 400 hours Rümi employees gave back to the community in 2022—and it’s still growing! We sat down with them to learn more about their experiences and what drives their passion for volunteering. **What do you enjoy most about volunteering?** Garrett says, “It’s all about making real connections. I love being able to talk to people face-to-face and show them the people behind the phone.” Thomas adds, “I enjoy meeting customers in person and hearing directly from them. It’s one thing to assume, but getting real feedback is so valuable.” **Why do you think volunteering and connection go hand in hand?** Garrett shares, “I was born and raised in Alberta, and I love hearing people’s stories—how they heard about ATCO or how much they love Blue Flame Kitchen cookbooks. Everyone has a story!” Thomas explains, “Since I’m not originally from Alberta, I see how deeply connected the province is. Everyone knows someone who knows ATCO. And since Rümi is part of the ATCO family, that helps us build trust and understanding.” **What’s your favorite part of volunteering?** Thomas says, “It’s just fun! The conversations are great, and even though it can be fast-paced, I love every event. We’re always out there, not stuck behind a booth.” Garrett agrees, “It’s not just about the activations or giving out prizes. We also volunteer at places like WINS, and doing it as a team makes it even better. It’s a great way to build friendships while giving back.” **What’s your most memorable moment as a volunteer?** As they smile, Thomas recalls a funny moment at a Cavalry FC event. “We had this green Rümi sunglasses giveaway. One guy wanted them so badly—it was his birthday. He ended up trading his brand-name sunglasses for a pair of ours right in front of us!” Garrett laughs, “That was epic! It’s those little moments that make volunteering so rewarding.” **What’s next for Rümi in the community?** Since launching ügive, our community initiative, we've focused on supporting local charities that align with our mission. From home builds with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta to clean-up projects with HomeSpace, and donation drives like Handbags with Heart with WINS, our Rümineers continue to step up and give back. **2022 Community Investment Achievements:** - Exclusive sponsorship of the Home Refurbishment Program with Habitat for Humanity, including $20,000 and 6 months of free energy from ATCOenergy, plus meals from Blue Flame Kitchen for 10 families. - Over 400 volunteer hours contributed by Rümineers. - Built homes with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. - Sorted donations with WINS (Women in Need Society). - Revitalized spaces with the HomeSpace Society. - Launched a matching program to support Rümineers who volunteer outside of ügive initiatives.
