Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11

This morning, the Long Grove Fire Department got an emergency call about a house fire at 1889 Checker Road. Over the past two weeks, they had been using this vacant house for firefighter training, with eight other departments participating daily in multiple interior drills. The training concluded yesterday, and the fire department had planned to burn the house down this Saturday morning for the developer, with local residents invited to attend. However, things didn’t go as planned. This morning, a neighbor initially thought the fire department might still be conducting training and hesitated to report it. It wasn’t until she realized the fire was unattended that she called it in. Long Grove quickly responded with their full force, including Tanker 55, since there are no nearby hydrants. The first unit arrived to find a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had been stored. When firefighters arrived, the garage was already engulfed, and the pallet storage area was heavily ablaze. Long Grove Squad 55 was positioned in the driveway, supplying five lines, while Tanker 55 transported 3,000 gallons of water. As the fire intensified, Tankers were requested from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake to ensure enough water supply to prevent the structure from collapsing prematurely. Engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine joined the efforts, along with an ambulance from Arlington Heights for rehabilitation support. Much of the house was salvaged, but significant damage was inflicted. The firefighting efforts were relentless, with crews managing to contain the flames and apply foam to smoldering areas in an effort to conserve water. As the situation stabilized, Prospect Heights Tanker 9 arrived, bringing an additional 3,000 gallons of water to supplement the dwindling supply. The Fox Lake tanker made two trips to refill its 3,000-gallon capacity, ensuring continuous water flow. Firefighters worked tirelessly both inside and outside the house, taking lines into the structure to make an interior attack on the blaze. By the time the fire was under control, the bulk of the house remained intact, though heavily damaged. Photos taken by Larry Shapiro captured the intense moments of the operation, showing firefighters applying foam to smoldering areas and battling hot spots within the pallet pile. The fire department's recent training sessions at the same location proved invaluable. Multiple evolutions were conducted daily, with firefighters practicing interior fires and victim searches. The training involved participation from Wheeling, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove, and Barrington. The final days of training saw increased fire intensity, preparing firefighters for scenarios like today’s incident. A full gallery of images from the fire can be viewed here. Additionally, photos from the training sessions conducted over the past two weeks are available in separate galleries. These training exercises significantly enhanced the readiness of the departments involved, making them better prepared for emergencies like this morning's fire.
