Autodesk Showcases its Portfolio for the Convergence of Design and Manufacturing at IMTS 2018
As the boundaries between design and manufacturing continue to blur, understanding and adapting to the future of production has become more crucial than ever for businesses. This week, as the massive biennial International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) kicks off in Chicago, Autodesk is highlighting its range of technologies aimed at helping manufacturers embrace these changes. Our goal is to empower them to produce more efficiently, improve product quality, and achieve this with fewer resources.
At our booth, visitors will find a variety of exciting exhibits, including the Lightning Motorcycle featuring a generatively designed swingarm and the WAAMpeller, a hybrid additive and subtractive machined propeller created by the Port of Rotterdam’s RAMLAB. These examples showcase how cutting-edge technology can revolutionize traditional manufacturing processes.
For instance, our generative design capabilities within Fusion 360 allow manufacturers to expedite their product development by leveraging AI to generate numerous viable design options tailored to specific requirements such as strength, weight, material type, and manufacturing methods. This approach not only accelerates development but often leads to superior results—lighter, stronger, and more consolidated parts. A prime example is General Motors’ application of this technology, which has led to significant advancements in component efficiency.
We’re also unveiling recent enhancements in our CNC machining and additive manufacturing tools through PowerMill and Netfabb. PowerMill 2019 introduces dedicated additive strategies and simulation tools specifically crafted to tackle the unique challenges posed by hybrid machinery. These tools generate safe and efficient toolpaths for directed energy deposition (DED) processes using either wire-fed or powder-blown hardware. Unlike simple reverse engineering, PowerMill offers specialized 3D and 5D programs capable of constructing entire components from scratch. Additionally, it retains extensive subtractive manufacturing options for precision CNC machining where necessary. Meanwhile, Netfabb 2019 brings several upgrades, including multi-scale cloud simulations and automatic support adjustments.
To complete our vision, we’re presenting Fusion Production, our concept for the cloud-connected 'smart factory.' Accessible via browsers or smartphone apps, Fusion Production offers real-time insights into production statuses for design, manufacturing, and operational teams irrespective of their geographical locations. This facilitates quicker decision-making and action-taking. Automation like sending data directly from PowerMill to Fusion Production streamlines workflows from design to production while minimizing manual errors. Such automation enhances autonomy and reduces operator intervention with machinery, something previously unimaginable.
Despite these technological strides, we recognize that software alone cannot fabricate tangible goods. Hence, Autodesk has forged strong alliances with leading machine tool manufacturers worldwide. By ensuring our software integrates seamlessly with major CNC machines, we enable our clients to focus on what truly matters—creating high-quality products accurately and efficiently. Imagine having the most innovative designs but lacking the ability to bring them to life; it would render those designs useless.
Among our valued collaborators are prominent CNC manufacturers like BeAM Machines, C. R. Onsrud, Datron, DMG MORI, DMS, Doosan, Haas, Hardinge, Okuma, and others.
Wade Anderson, Product Specialist Sales and Tech Center Manager at Okuma, described the partnership succinctly:
“Autodesk isn’t your average CAD/CAM software company. It’s a fully integrated manufacturing solutions provider. Their capacity to deliver end-to-end solutions—from initial design through programming to quality assurance and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) monitoring—enables them to guide a part from conception to completion. Together, Okuma and Autodesk offer state-of-the-art technologies enabling our shared customers to boost productivity, profitability, and take charge of their futures.â€

IMTS participants are invited to stop by the Autodesk booth (#133222) in the East Building at McCormick Place to explore our offerings and collaborative efforts with machine tool providers. You’ll also get to witness firsthand what remarkable creations manufacturers like Lightning Motorcycle, the Port of Rotterdam, and Briggs Automotive Company have achieved using our advanced software paired with CNC technology from numerous partners.
