Autodesk’s Second Investment in Factory_OS Fuels Innovation in Industrialized Construction, Automation & Workforce Training

I’ve always been inspired by companies that challenge the status quo and use their influence to drive positive change. Factory_OS is one of those rare startups that’s not only pushing the boundaries of construction but also proving that business can be a powerful force for good. As a modular construction pioneer, they’re redefining how we build—making it faster, safer, and more sustainable. That’s why I’m thrilled to share that Autodesk is expanding its partnership with them through a second investment. For years, Autodesk and Factory_OS have worked closely to integrate digital tools into the construction process. With design and engineering now under one roof, the collaboration has become even more seamless. This integration leads to better problem-solving, improved efficiency, and higher-quality results. For example: - Laser plotting ensures precision and reduces waste. - Automated cutting machines boost productivity and safety. - A dedicated innovation lab allows for rapid testing and implementation of new techniques. But beyond these technical advancements, Factory_OS is helping us refine our software to support broader industry adoption. Their work shows us how to create tools that make prefabrication easier and more accessible for all builders. It also highlights the importance of reskilling workers as technology continues to evolve. Together, we're building a future where housing is more affordable, and workers are empowered with new skills.

I recently had the chance to speak with Rick Holliday, co-founder and CEO of Factory_OS, about what this second investment means for the company and the industry: “Historically, the disconnect between design and construction has held back industrialized building. But with Autodesk, we’re bridging that gap. Better integration means faster timelines, better training, and more efficient workflows. This investment is accelerating our mission to scale modular housing and bring affordable homes to more people.” As an essential service during the pandemic, Factory_OS proved how critical their model is for addressing the affordable housing crisis. Their approach—drawing from manufacturing principles—creates safer, more efficient, and cost-effective homebuilding. By using assembly lines, they reduce costs by 20%, speed up construction by 40%, and cut material waste by 70%. In late 2022, they built a full housing complex in West Oakland in just 10 days—a feat that would have taken over a year using traditional methods. They’re also currently constructing supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals in San Francisco, marking the city’s first use of modular construction for such a project. These efforts are not just innovative—they’re life-changing.

Factory_OS is also investing in its workforce. With the support of Autodesk, they’re enhancing training programs and integrating digital tools like Revit and BIM 360 into daily operations. Larry Pace, co-founder and COO, shared: “We want our team to embrace automation, not fear it. By combining Autodesk’s technology with our own training, we’re creating jobs that are more skilled, more rewarding, and more impactful. Our workers are becoming more productive, earning more, and helping build affordable homes at scale.” This partnership is more than just financial—it’s about shaping the future of construction. We’re excited to continue supporting Factory_OS as they lead the way in making housing more affordable, sustainable, and efficient for everyone. Learn more about Factory_OS.
