Water-related meteorological element detection equipment engineering research and development project passed the acceptance
On March 23, the Science and Technology Service Network Plan (STS Program) led by the Anhui Institute of Optics and Mechanics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully passed its acceptance test in Hefei, Anhui Province. This significant achievement marks a major step forward in the development of advanced meteorological detection technology.
The project focuses on the study of water-related atmospheric elements, which play a critical role in global climate change. To better understand the transformation and circulation of these elements, the research team developed a set of integrated detection equipment, including laser radar, full-sky cloud imagers, and precipitation instruments. These tools allow for high-resolution, continuous monitoring of atmospheric water vapor, clouds, and precipitation—providing valuable data for meteorological stations.
The project has overcome key engineering challenges such as long-term stability, field calibration, and real-time data processing. It aims to commercialize independently developed meteorological detection equipment, promoting the overall industrial upgrade of water-related meteorological technologies.
So far, the team has completed the engineering development, product standardization, mass production, and application demonstrations of the equipment. The water vapor lidar, for example, uses synchronized detection of aerosols and real-time atmospheric transmittance correction, significantly improving measurement accuracy. It also features an innovative self-calibration method that eliminates the need for weather balloons.
The full-sky cloud imager combines visible light during the day with infrared imaging at night, enabling round-the-clock observation. Advanced image synthesis techniques reduce mechanical movement, while a convolutional neural network-based algorithm ensures reliable cloud data products.
The project has established detection standards and passed third-party testing. Modular designs allow individual components to be used separately or together, providing precise data on water vapor profiles, cloud cover, rainfall, and precipitation patterns.
From 2017 to 2018, the team conducted field experiments at several key meteorological observatories, including the Shou County National Climate Observatory, Zhangqiu Meteorological Bureau, and Beijing’s southern suburbs. These tests validated the reliability of the equipment and supported the modular construction of the system.
During the project's implementation, three high-tech companies were incubated, and a production line was established, capable of manufacturing 120 sets of equipment annually. Before the project began, sales of lidar, cloud imagers, and precipitation instruments reached 25 million yuan, with projected future sales reaching 1–2 billion yuan. A team of skilled professionals was also trained, including recipients of the Anhui Youth Science and Technology Award and other notable achievements.
The project results were showcased at events like the Volkswagen Entrepreneurship Innovation Week and the China International Hi-Tech Fair, where they received the Excellent Product Award.
Led by the Hefei Research Institute of Remote Sensing, the project involved multiple institutions, including the Minjiang Emerging Industry Development Center, Hefei Landun Optoelectronics, Anhui Institute of Meteorological Sciences, and several other leading companies.
Experts reviewed the project’s progress and future plans, conducting thorough inspections and agreeing to its acceptance. This milestone represents a major advancement in China’s meteorological technology and its ability to monitor atmospheric conditions with greater precision and efficiency.
