New Motor Oil For Passenger Cars – MPG Boost Too
A new oil grade, SAE 16, is set to enter the passenger car market and may soon be used across all new Toyota models. This development could lead to a noticeable improvement in fuel efficiency, with some vehicles potentially seeing an increase in miles per gallon (MPG). The introduction of this lower-viscosity oil aims to reduce engine friction, making it especially beneficial for newer, more efficient engines.
The SAE 16 grade was developed following a request from a group of passenger car manufacturers who wanted a viscosity grade below SAE 20. The goal is to improve fuel economy by reducing hydrodynamic friction, as explained by Michael Covitch, Chair of the SAE International Engine Oil Viscosity Classification (EOVC) task force. “The main driving force for using lower-viscosity oils is to lower hydrodynamic friction, thereby increasing fuel economy,†he stated on SAE.org.
One key reason for choosing the number 16 instead of the traditional five-step scale is to avoid confusion with existing grades like SAE 15W-40, which is widely used in heavy-duty diesel trucks and passenger diesel cars. By stepping down in fours—such as SAE 12, 8, or 4—SAE can maintain a clear distinction between high- and low-temperature grades, indicated by the "W" for winter.
For the average driver, this means staying informed about the recommended oil type for their vehicle. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines, and consider using dealership services for maintenance to ensure you're using the best products for your car.
